Cavan, was built in 1840, replacing an earlier parsonage.\u00a0 The house is surrounded by the remains of its nineteenth-century gardens, although some elements are much older. We believe that our cedar tree is upwards of 300 years old.\u00a0 It is mentioned by Charles Robert Leslie in the 1870s, in his diaries -\u201cI sat out under the cedar tree\u201d- indicating that it was already a significant landmark in the garden, a mature specimen upwards of 100 years old.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/9n3.6b1.myftpupload.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/Cedar-tree-nr-flower-garden-c1883.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-265 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/9n3.6b1.myftpupload.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/Cedar-tree-nr-flower-garden-c1883-792x1024.jpg\" alt=\"Cedar tree nr flower garden c1883\" width=\"479\" height=\"619\" srcset=\"https:\/\/9n3.6b1.myftpupload.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/Cedar-tree-nr-flower-garden-c1883-792x1024.jpg 792w, https:\/\/9n3.6b1.myftpupload.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/Cedar-tree-nr-flower-garden-c1883-232x300.jpg 232w, https:\/\/9n3.6b1.myftpupload.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/Cedar-tree-nr-flower-garden-c1883-768x994.jpg 768w, https:\/\/9n3.6b1.myftpupload.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/Cedar-tree-nr-flower-garden-c1883-624x807.jpg 624w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 479px) 100vw, 479px\" \/><\/a>\u00a0 \u201c<em>The cedar tree near the flower garden\u201d 1883<\/em><\/p>\n<p>This suggests that it may have been part of the planting for the Parsonage garden of c. 1728, when, more than likely, it was imported as a sapling with several years of growth. 1963<\/em><\/p>\n<p>It is in the nature of these great cedars, that they shed large limbs; then they put their energy into re-growing in a different direction, so that after several decades they are stands over the lawns, May 2017<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Ironically, just eight months after the foregoing piece was penned, \u201cStorm Eleanor\u201d, on the evening of January 3rd 2018, has devastated the Cedar once again, with a severe north-westerly gust removing a 20-foot section from its crown, along with a number of lower branches.<\/p>\n<p><a
